Mummy-Case of Padimut
Mummy-Case of Padimut…
• This is one of many detailed scenes adorning the mummy-case of Padimut, a priest and engraver who lived in ancient Thebes in the 22nd Dynasty, c.945-712 BC.
Coffin paintings such as describe the ideal journey of the deceased through the underworld, the land of Duat
This scene shows the weighing of the heart ritual. Padimut’s heart is being weighed with Osiris in judgement. It is weighed against the Feather of Truth; if it is lighter than the feather, he will be able to proceed into the afterlife but if not, he is devoured by Ammit.
Now in Harvard Semitic Museum, Cambridge.
