HATSHEPSUT: The Pharaoh

HATSHEPSUT: How She Became a Pharaoh

A pharaoh is a King, a position dedicated to Ancient Egyptian male royals only. The decision for who becomes the next King/Pharaoh rest in the hands of the ruling Queen of that day. It is believed that this system of rulership was established by Goddess Isis for her son Horus and his descendants (The Ancient Egyptians). Female royals ruled in the absence of Goddess Isis, representing her on the throne of Ancient Egypt which puts them (females) in a high position than their male counterparts as the female (Queen) decides who is to be the next king.

At the time of Hatshepsut, she would have been the Queen to choose the next king. however, if there is no

male suitable for the position at the time she is in charge as a queen, then she would have to occupy both the male and female position as a king and queen until a suitable person is found. It may also have been that the next king was at a younger age which required Hatshepsut, the queen at the time to rule until the king reach an adult age to take over.

In this case, she would have been addressed by the title Pharaoh, the same title used for male Kings for ruling in the absence of a king.
